Copia

All your books. All your friends. All in one.
Copia is based on a simple idea: If a book is worth reading, it's worth sharing. And with partner DMC, our handpicked team went beyond the agency model to a fully integrated product development group responsible for every aspect of ideating, creating, building and marketing Copia.
Copia Community and Marketplace
Challenge
The interconnected Copia social ereading experience needed an equally forward-thinking online experience and ecommerce model. Copia readers needed to be able to gather, discuss, discover, buy and share — regardless of their device or access point.
Idea
Our team designed and developed a feature-rich online hub for facilitating deeper community interaction and ecommerce. Readers would be able to grow and share their libraries, which helped Copia transition from being just a social reader to being a recommendation engine where users could buy their friends’ favorites.
Results
Readers can now sync everything from the ereading experience with their online account so it can be shared with friends. That’s what makes Copia the first and only platform that lets you participate in conversations about books while you read. And, with a built-in marketplace, readers also have the opportunity to instantly buy friends’ recommendations, bestsellers, classics and more.
Copia Brand Development
Challenge
With Copia, we were first asked to envision the future of digital reading. Then, we were asked to develop a brand experience that brought that future to life.
Idea
The mantra, “Better Together” fueled our brand strategy and all visual aspects. Both strategy and form were developed from the ground up: from vision, mission and naming to visual identity, print materials, advertising, motion graphics, interface, product development, environmental and booth executions. A family of logos is supported with a harmonious, expansive color system and graphic style dubbed the “particle universe”, meant to represent Copia users and content.
Results
With the Copia brand, we were able to achieve a strong, iconic brand signature balanced against a contemporary and flexible system of graphics, style and messaging. The set of brand assets range in execution from clean and clear to rich and complex. This approach offers a growth and adaptability that will serve Copia’s brand well in the long term.
Copia for Tablet Experience
Challenge
eReaders have popularized epaper and ebook technology, but the actual reading experience falls short of the true digital potential. That’s why DMC asked VML to envision the future of ereading.
Idea
The result was Copia, the most innovative ereading platform developed to date. Copia transforms your bookshelf into a book club with the first truly social ereading experience. It’s a community, marketplace and family of devices all in one — where not only can readers take notes in the margin of any book or textbook, but they can organize and share those notes in a social way. Our team engaged in simultaneous and rapid development for each of the major mobile platforms, with products for iPad, Android-based phones and tablets, Windows 7 Phone and Touch, and desktop solutions for PC and Mac.
Results
Together we invented a new form of social reading, ereading application and web-based environment. And people took notice. It drew mentions in everything from The Wall Street Journal to Bloomberg TV to Wired. Thanks to Copia, readers could finally enjoy having all their books and all their friends — all in one.
