In the UK each year, an estimated 36,000 lose a loved one to suicide. 1 in 3 of them will have suicidal thoughts. 1 in 10 of them will attempt to take their own life. This film aims to lift the lid of the dangerous cycle of grief and mental health struggles that survivors face, often in silence.
The film is drawn from the personal experiences of those affected by suicide. As well as a range of focus groups with the bereaved, the executive producer of the film, Will Castle, lost his own father to suicide in 2010. Many of the scenes are drawn directly from Will’s own experiences in the years following the loss of his father, Paul.
Suicide-related grief is unique. Those who lose loved ones are often left with feelings of guilt, shame, anger, confusion, and pain that remains with them for years afterwards. Yet they are often overlooked when it comes to the wider conversation around suicide and mental health. Which is why the creatives behind the film, along with Suicide&Co, wanted to create a longer-form piece that would tell a clear and devastating story, while exhibiting the complex burden people carry through their lives. The film seeks to help those bereaved individuals to feel seen, and to show them that support is there thanks to the work of Suicide&Co.
