Colgate hijacks live TV as famous hosts brush their teeth on air, turning commercial breaks into a powerful movement for oral health

What if a commercial break stopped being an interruption and became the main event? For Oral Health Month, Colgate and VML Brazil flipped the script on traditional media. By getting Brazil’s biggest TV hosts to brush their teeth live on air right after tasting delicious recipes, the brand transformed a simple daily chore into a national spectacle of awareness, engaging millions of households in a completely fresh way.

The challenge was to create something that broke away from the traditional advertising format while still conveying the core message in a creative way, using language that resonated with the audience’s everyday lives. The Colgate Break flips the expected logic of advertising: instead of interrupting the content, it becomes the content itself. And that’s the kind of idea that makes the message stick—and, most importantly, changes behavior.

While the importance of oral hygiene is universally acknowledged, the actual habit of brushing three times a day — especially immediately after meals — is still widely neglected in the rush of daily life. VML Brazil’s challenge was to break through consumer apathy toward traditional dental care advertising. We needed to deliver a message that didn't just lecture, but actively triggered real behavioral change by seamlessly fitting into the daily routines of a massive audience.

Human behavior is deeply driven by representation and role models; we mirror the actions of those we admire. If Brazil's most beloved TV personalities spend hours cooking and eating delicious meals on screen, why should the story end there? The breakthrough insight was realizing that the moments right after these televised meals presented the ultimate, real-time opportunity to demonstrate the next crucial step: brushing.

This spark of inspiration birthed "Break Colgate." In an unprecedented integrated media stunt, Colgate hijacked the commercial breaks of major cooking and variety shows across Brazil's four largest free-to-air networks (Globo, Record, Band, and RedeTV). Staying in their actual show sets, celebrity hosts Thiago Oliveira, Guga Rocha, Érick Jacquin, and Edu Guedes picked up their Colgate toothbrushes and toothpaste to brush their teeth live. This 60-second takeover turned the ad break into a natural extension of the show itself, while the hosts took to their personal social channels to amplify the healthy habit online.

"Break Colgate" redefined TV product placement by turning advertising into useful, engaging content. By uniting fierce network rivals (Globo, Record, Band, and RedeTV) under one shared purpose, the campaign captured massive, multi-generational attention during Oral Health Month. Beyond driving brand recall, the initiative successfully humanized the act of brushing. By showing household names practicing self-care in real-time, Colgate solidified its position as an industry leader dedicated to shaping healthier habits and giving everyone a future to smile about.
