Dissatisfied with just meeting up at a bar, gen Z are drawn to venues that offer fun and novelty, according to an April 2025 report by Mintel: How Gen Z is changing social gathering. In addition, only 40% of gen Z say they have been part of informal social gatherings compared to 71% of gen Xers. Now, more play-first bars are designed to prioritize gen Z’s preference to build deeper connections through play and social activities.

Super Social in Dublin, Ireland is open for competitive socializing. The venue offers group spaces to play competitive darts, shuffleboard, golf, and other video-centric games reimagined for a modern weekend night out. Interactive, “tech-infused” games take connecting and socializing a step further for patrons aged 12 and up, or 18 and up later in the evening.

“I think it is a new offering for adults that is not focused on drinking,” Paul Quinn, co-founder of Super Social tells VML Intelligence. “The drinking culture seems to be changing but people still want a good night out. This is where the term competitive socializing has come from.” Opened in December 2024, Super Social has already grown in popularity in its first few months.

Meanwhile, at Board Dublin, expect to find an A-Z of board games, retro game nights and bingo. Open since January 2024, the self-proclaimed “bar specializing in low and no alcohol” is a cafe-meets-bar-meets-informal event space. Patrons are enticed by the inviting ambience and can find a low-key meet up space with a focus on intentional connection without alcohol being the central focus for the social gathering. After all, according to research from Kantar’s Food and Beverage report from April 2025, 71% of gen Zers are making a conscious effort to cut back on their alcohol consumption.

London’s popular neon-lit shuffleboard bar, Electric Shuffle has made its debut in Chicago in May. Its retro decor and ‘grammable set up make for an aesthetic throwback to bring young and old partiers together for a timeless game. Food and beverages are available, as well as large party spaces, allowing for hours of tournaments and friendly competition around the tables.

Heineken Japan turns a Roppongi bar into a gaming hub

Appealing to video gamers, Heineken Japan transformed Shot Bar Propaganda in Roppongi, Tokyo into a gaming hub for one night on March 17, 2025. With the intention to create an in-person space for gamers to gather and socialize, Heineken also hosted a gaming tournament for a friendly battle. Winner Takera Channel (real name Takera Okamoto) said in a release, "I thoroughly enjoyed Heineken's unique game event tonight and the opportunity to socialize with many people in a very relaxed atmosphere.”

Gen Z is infiltrating the night-life social scene with play, activities and fun—with equal parts embracing analog and digital activities. Whilst some may opt for luddite mode, others are happy for tech activities to be part of the convivial experience.
