Gemma Spence is a recognised global commerce leader with over 15 years of experience spanning client-side, retail, and agency roles. Her career has been built across the full end-to-end eCommerce value chain, from strategic channel planning to operational execution, with a consistent focus on driving growth through innovation at the intersection of sales and marketing.
Gemma leads the EMEA Commerce Practice at VML, supporting over 1,800 specialists in delivering integrated commerce strategies across the region. Globally, she champions the evolution of digital commerce capabilities, including the development of Commerce Studio - an innovative platform designed to optimise content performance and streamline operations.
Prior to VML, Gemma served as Chief Commerce Officer at PHD in Omnicom Media Group, where she founded Transact, a global eCommerce consultancy. Her work spanned FMCG, automotive, and beauty categories, as well as in-house eCommerce operations for major consumer electronics brands -delivering value across the entire digital commerce spectrum.
Gemma’s industry influence has been widely recognised. She was named one of CIO Magazine’s 20 Businesswomen of 2021 and 35 Under 35 (2022), Management Today’s 35 Women Under 35, Mediatel’s Future Media Leader, and was honoured by Aviva’s Women of the Future in 2023. A contributing editor for WARC and Econsultancy, she has played an active role in shaping eCommerce standards and industry benchmarks in collaboration with some of the world’s leading brands. Beyond her corporate achievements, Gemma holds an Executive MBA with Distinction from the University of Oxford and is now pursuing a PhD in Marketing Science.
