New Zealand has a population of just 5 million. ACC sees around 2 million injury claims every year – around 90% of which could have been prevented. To reduce injuries and their impact, ACC embarked on a step-change prevention approach.

When someone gets injured while hunting, it doesn’t just affect them, there can be many flow-on effects for their friends, family, and many others.

Injury Prevention Programme Leader, ACC

To reduce injuries and their impact, ACC embarked on a step-change prevention approach. We discovered that people take more care when they understand an injury won’t just impact them.

We let people know that by taking a moment to ‘Have a Hmmm’ and consider the impact of their injury on others, they were less likely to hurt themselves.

Across multiple channels, we let people know that by taking a moment to ‘Have a Hmmm’ and consider the impact of their injury on others, they were less likely to hurt themselves and cause harm to those they care about.

The results show that our approach is already succeeding in changing behaviour. Over half of people who saw the campaign state they have taken steps to prevent injuries, with a majority considering the impact of their actions, and taking a moment to think before doing something risky.
