In 2018, Uruguay passed a law banning single-use plastic bags to protect the environment. This led to the rise in popularity of reusable bags—a brilliant solution with one major flaw: people often forget to bring them when grocery shopping. Instead of being reused, these bags pile up at home, leaving customers frustrated and limiting their purchases to what they can carry by hand. This not only impacts customer satisfaction but also negatively affects business performance.
At TA-TA, Uruguay’s most popular supermarket chain known for its low prices, we asked ourselves: what is the one thing our customers never forget when they visit us? The answer was simple—discounts. This insight inspired us to turn the problem of forgotten bags into an unforgettable solution.
We created The Rewards Bag, a smart reusable bag linked to each shopper's ID via a unique QR code. At the supermarket entrance, scanning the bag unlocked a personalized list of discounts tailored to the shopper’s habits. To redeem these offers, customers simply scanned the bag again at checkout, seamlessly applying the savings to their purchase. This eliminated the hassle of coupons while driving sales, fostering loyalty, and promoting sustainability.
The Rewards Bag delivered remarkable results:
