VML Czechia led development of the KOMMO® technique to help patients with Multiple Sclerosis.

With the number of people worldwide living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) increasing by almost 30% in recent years, VML Czechia in collaboration with St. Joseph’s Home, an inpatient facility in the Czech Republic focused on people in advanced stages of MS, and the First Faculty of Medicine at Charles University, developed KOMMO® – a new exercise system that connects cognitive and physical exercises to support people living with the disease.

Inspired by successful training systems like Pilates (first created for World War I bedridden patients), KOMMO® transforms the dual-task element of neurorehabilitation into a scalable wellness product adaptable to all ages, levels of fitness and neurological conditions, linking cognitive and physical tasks to train the connection between the brain and body.

KOMMO® Innovation Case Study
There are still very few exercise methods that systematically connect brain and body function. KOMMO® can be used with patients at different stages of multiple sclerosis and is also relevant for healthy individuals. Training that connects the brain and the body may have wider preventative value in the context of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease.

The First Faculty of Medicine at Charles University

The number of people living with multiple sclerosis worldwide has increased by about 30% in recent years. St. Joseph's Home cares for people in the late stages of the disease and also needed to build greater awareness to support fundraising for its work.

The discovery of the dual-task element of neurorehabilitation led to the development of a completely new exercise system – easily scalable and adaptable for people of all ages, fitness levels and neurological conditions.

By intertwining cognitive and physical curricula, the first-of-its-kind, joyful exercise system, KOMMO®, stimulates more efficient ways of processing and sending information between the brain and the body — strengthening existing neural connections and fostering new ones.

KOMMO®, a registered trademark of St. Joseph's Home, is backed by science (with two BSc theses published and a master’s thesis in development) and tested for likability (seven sold workshops and over 60 classes). The MVP consists of the KOMMO® dual-task bar and KOMMO® curriculum.

By offering a novel and playful way of training neuroplasticity, KOMMO® not only creates a sustainable income for the MS charity, but also fundamentally shifts public perception and builds empathy and understanding of neurological health. KOMMO® classes are currently available through St. Joseph’s Home in Czechia and are being assessed for global scaling.
